The Interplay Between Foreignization of Dish Name and Interactive Meaning of Visual Image in Food Documentary

A Bite of China 1, a popular food documentary with numerous food-related culture-specific items and including the interplay between subtitles visual images, is selected as data to be examined in this study. The purposes study are firstly identify foreignization strategy translation dish names based on Aixela’s model, secondly explore images foreignization, so demonstrate how help make up for loss caused by further facilitate understanding Chinese dishes culture. Purposive sampling employed collect 112 samples corresponding obtained. findings reveal that transliteration, linguistic intratextual gloss under category three main strategies when rendering into English. Apart from affecting meaning conveyance names, results also suggest interactive meanings play vital role facilitating target audiences’ providing detailed background information, whereas connotative behind cannot or can hardly obtained through alone.
